If you are planning to join a group tour on your own, you may notice a single supplement alongside the tour price. What does it cover, and can you avoid it by sharing a room? Here is how it works on our tours.
What is a single supplement?
Our standard per-person tour price assumes that two people share a room. When you travel alone and have a room to yourself, the hotel charges more per person than it would for two guests sharing that room. For example, if a double room costs £100 per night, two people sharing it pay £50 each. A room for one person might cost £80 per night, making the single supplement £30 per night (£80 minus £50). A room for one is rarely priced at half the cost of a double room. In some higher-category hotels, the room rate for one guest may be almost the same as for two guests, with the second breakfast accounting for most of the price difference. The single supplement goes towards this extra accommodation cost per person. It is an accommodation charge, not a fee for joining a tour without a companion.
If you are travelling with someone but each prefer a separate room, the single supplement also applies to the person occupying a room alone. The amount varies by itinerary and is shown in the pricing table on every tour page, so you can see it before booking.
Can I share a room with another solo traveller?
We are sometimes asked whether we can match two travellers who would like to share. We occasionally receive such requests, and some guests are happy with the idea. In practice, it is rare: most people prefer the privacy of their own room and do not want to share with someone they have not met.
If you would like us to consider room sharing, please let us know when you enquire. We can note your preference and tell you if a suitable opportunity arises, but we cannot guarantee a roommate. Unless a room share is agreed and confirmed, please budget for the single supplement shown on the tour page.
Single supplement and solo supplement: what is the difference?
Our pricing tables show “Single / Solo supplement” as two separate figures. The single supplement covers having a room to yourself. The solo supplement is different. If there are no other confirmed travellers for your chosen departure, we will tell you before confirming the booking. You can choose another date with confirmed bookings, if one suits you, or ask us to run your tour privately and pay the solo supplement. We never charge it without your prior agreement. If other travellers later join the same departure, we refund the solo supplement, as explained in the notes beneath the tour’s pricing table. You may be travelling alone but still be part of a group, in which case the solo supplement does not apply.
Travelling solo can be a wonderful way to discover the Caucasus while sharing the sightseeing and dinners with a group. Browse our multi-country tours or contact us if you would like to discuss a particular departure or room arrangement.
